OK, here is why bees do "orientation flights." This comes from an experienced beekeeper:
"They are orienting because they are about to join the work force, and they are learning the landmarks needed to return safely to the hive. They had been working inside the hive as nurse bees for a short while, then possibly guard bees, and now they are being promoted to foragers."
Foragers are the bees you see on the flowers in your yard. They are busy gathering nectar and pollen to bring back to the hive.
So are the Bees going back to school as well? Is that why they have Orientation? :)
